Translocating some Gujarat lions to Madhya Pradesh - A good move to diversify?
The Supreme Court has recently ordered to move some of the lions from Gujarat’s Gir Forest to Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh.
For:
- Gujarat being prone to natural calamities, hence the court has issued the orders of translocation on order to safeguard the Asiatic Lion numbers
- This move would also safeguard them against their annihilation
- The new home of the lions also owns the title of the ‘historical habitat of the lions’
- Kerbed to a particular location the lions are at the risk of excessive inbreeding, thus leading to several ailments in the lion population
Against:
- Gir Sanctuary, is the only sanctuary to keep the lions in a good health as compared to other sanctuaries
- Gir’s forest division progressed from expelling pastoralists in helping them as an integral part of the Gir ecosystem rapidly reimbursing them for assaulted cows, hence professionally getting the private sector to sponsor sub-projects like making villagers' wells safe for lions
Conclusion:
- Instead of relocating all the lions from the Gir forest to Kuno Wildlife sanctuary, some of the lions can be transferred to Madhya Pradesh; rest can be placed in the Gir Sanctuary itself.
