W20: New International Grouping for Women’s Empowerment
Question : Recently the G-20 nations launched the W20, a grouping of female leaders. Provide an overview of this new grouping.
- W20 has just been formed with a new president, Gulden Turktan to work as an outreach group and promote gender inclusive economic growth and development
- The leading G-20 economies have launched the new grouping to increase the role of women in international economic growth
- W20 is a group launched in the Turkish capital of Ankara
- Group also works for women empowerment and their participation in economic growth
- Women’s participation is paramount to economic growth and women participation is critical for national prosperity
- Education as the key for empowerment was the aim of W20 which also focused on eliminating discrimination in remuneration for women workers
- W20 will hold its first summit next month
- W20 promotes gender inclusiveness and gender equity for strong, sustainable and balanced economic growth
- Women constitute over half of the population of the world yet their participation in economic growth is far below the potential
- Gender inequality restricts poverty alleviation and development
- Mission of W20 is promotion of international gender inclusive economic growth
- G20 Commitments
These include the following:
- “women’s full economic and social participation” made in the Los Cabos Leaders’ Declaration in 2012,
- “women’s financial inclusion and education” in the St. Petersburg Leaders’ Declaration in 2013,
- “reducing the gap in participation rates between men and women in our countries by 25 percent by 2025 (taking into account national circumstances)” in the Brisbane Leaders’ Declaration in 2014.
- Women Entrepreneurs Association of Turkey is caring the W20 and firming part of its steering committee along with Women and Democracy Association and Turkish Businesswomen Association
