Want to be either a psychiatrist or a neurologist, please suggest preparation and courses
I want o take up Biology in 11th standard next year. I want to be either a psychiatrist or a neurologist. I am a decent scorer of Science and Mathematics so I believe that if I try hard enough I will be able to get a decent score in any competitive exam. What I want to ask is that what sort of preparation and courses I would have to undertake in order to achieve my dream. Please give me your valuable suggestions. Thank you.
Answer:
To become a Psychiatrist or a Neurologist, Indian colleges and institute offer various courses for which admission is based mostly on entrances conducted by the universities. On the national level there are entrances that can help you secure a seat in the best colleges offering these programs.
Entrance exams for Psychiatry:
- The Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) entrance exam
- The Indian Institute of Technology - Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE)
- The Diploma of National Board (DNB) Exam.
- Entrance exams conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS)
- Entrance exams conducted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
- The Institute of Human Behavior and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) Entrance Exam
- The All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AIIPMR) Entrance Exam.
To become a neurologist one has to complete the DO and MD in neurology from a recognized medical college. You can choose to specialize in pediatrics, clinical neurophysiology, and neuropathology and neurosurgery disciplines.
For preparations of these entrances you must have in-depth knowledge of science and related subjects. You can rely on preparatory books and also join preparatory classes that help you evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. Good luck.
