Was PM Modi's First Independence Day Speech Impressive?

PM Modi first Independence Day Speech is a new topic of debate these days. The `Modi`fied Independence Day speech was delivered without any bullet-proof screen. At one side where the common men was delighted to hear their New Prime Minister, at the same time political parties called the speech as a zero effect speech that just focused on "pedestrian issues" on Independence Day.

- PM Modi was not there at the Red Fort to gain accolades from opposition parties. He was there to connect with the people and he was able to do it successfully.
- The citizens of India appreciated that Prime Minister delivered the speech without using any script.
- PM Modi already said in his speech that he is standing at a national stage as a servant and therefore, it should not be converted into a political stage.
- PM Modi entire speech focused on the key issues like women safety, female infanticides, digital India, manufacturing and sanitation. None of the issue can be termed as small issues in India.
- PM Modi focused on dream of Digital India. He is right as around 100 billion worth electronic goods are imported from other countries and the figure is expected to reach 400 billion by 2020. If it continues, in the coming years, India will be paying more duty on electronic goods as compared to fuel.
- PM Modi called him as outsider who tried to take an insider view and came to the conclusion that India needs organic unity and not assembled entity.

- PM Modi speech can be termed as a preaching speech that is far away from the process of real transformation.
- PM Modi speech didn’t address the key issues like corruption, inflation, terrorism and foreign policy.
- It was an incomplete speech with no elaboration on the policies. A general statement on poverty will not do any good for the country. Also, in recent days, the government refused to compromise over the food subsidies.
- No matter how laudable objectives are or how visionary the speech is, it requires a roadmap to be achieved. As of now, there were no key announcements made in the budget or otherwise.
- The idea of scrapping planning commission was announced without any prior consultation with the states.
- PM Modi talked about the 10 Year Business Model. It is a stretched period to make necessary changes in the country.

Conclusion

The opposition parties should understand the PM Modi was there at the Red Fort to deliver the Independence Day Speech. He was not there to deliver the manifesto. There is a difference between the two terms. He delivered the speech for people. It was not meant to please the opposition parties. The speech was a symbol of smooth transition of democracy. He didn’t criticize the previous government, spoke on the key issues and inspired common men. Therefore, the criticism of zero effect speech is irrelevant.
