Some of the already well-established specializations within the field of Bio-Medical Engineering are Bio-Instrumentation, Bio-Mechanics, Systems Physiology and Rehabilitation engineering.
•Bio-Instrumentation deals with the application of Electronics and Measurement principles and techniques to develop devices used in diagnostic medicine and treatment of disease. Bio-Instrumentation teams gather engineers that design, fabricate, test, and manufacture advanced medical instruments and implantable devices into a single, more productive unit for better healthcare services.
•Bio-Mechanics is the mechanics applied to biological or medical problems. It includes the study of motion, of material deformation, of flow within the body and in devices and transport of chemical constituents across biological and synthetic media and membranes. Application of mechanical innovations in the field of medicine so as to make the procedures more efficient and precise.
•Bio-Materials involves both living tissue and materials, these are used for implantation in the body. Understanding the properties of the living material, is vital in the design of implant materials. •Rehabilitation engineering is a relatively new and growing specialty, under Bio-Medical engineering, mainly categorized for the work done for making quality of life better for people with physical impairments. The motive of a Rehabilitation Engineer is to design, develop, adapt, test, evaluate, apply, and distribute technological solutions to problems confronted by individuals with disabilities.
