What are the courses and study options for Geomatics in the UK? Please tell me about the courses offered for Geomatics at various levels along with the names of the universities that offer them.
At undergraduate level there are only a few geomatics courses available in the UK at the University of Newcastle, University College London, and the University of East London. They offer dedicated single honours geomatics courses. GIS is more widely taught and are usually studied as part of joint honours courses with geography. Many of the courses on offer are accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) as well as the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), so along with securing an academic degree you also get part way towards a full professional qualification. Some institutions, even if they do not offer undergraduate courses, offer dedicated master's degree programs in Geomatics.
The Institute of Engineering Surveying and Space Geodesy (IESSG) at Nottingham University and Plymouth University's Institute of Marine Studies are two such institutes. The Department of Geomatic Engineering at UCL offers a range of five MSc courses; each specialized in various aspects of Geomatics, namely GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry with remote sensing, hydrographic surveying, and surveying. There are two postgraduate programs available at the University of Newcastle offering an MRes in Geomatics and an MRes in Spatial Network Management. These two courses offer training in research methods and are more appropriate for graduates who would like to hang about in a research environment.
