What is Investment Management?

I want to understand the term Investment Management before I take this up as my career prospect?


Investment management is a general term that is referred to the buying and selling of investments and securities within a group. It may also include banking and budgeting duties, as well as taxes. The primary objective is to achieve a specific investment range that is done by portfolio management and trading of securities. It is the professional asset management of various securities (shares, bonds and other securities) and other assets ( like real estate) in order to meet the predetermined investment goals for the benefit of the investors. There can be various kinds of investors such as institutions which include insurance companies, pension funds, corporations, charities, educational establishments etc or private investors which consists of investment contracts and collective investment schemes of mutual funds or exchange-traded funds. The process of investment management includes various different elements of financial statement analysis, asset selection, stock selection, plan implementation and on-going monitoring of investments. The bigger the company the more of people hired as investment managers.
Investment management, if put in simple words can be summed up as the management that requires managing/raising money by investing it in variety of asset classes including equities and bonds. The primary task involves supervising the proper utilization of hard earned money or assets of businesses or individual clients.
