What licenses are required to offer public services in Metallurgy?
I am a student of XI in Science stream with PCM. I aspire to go for metallurgical engineering from College of Engineering, Pune. I have heard that along with the regular college course, one also needs to secure licenses for public services. What are those licenses and what is the procedure for securing it. Apart from engineering what are the other courses in metallurgy?
Apart from bachelor’s and master’s programs in metallurgy, you will need to secure a license if you want to offer services to the general public. There is a procedure for securing the license. You must first pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam proctored by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). Students aspiring for license are also expected to gain four years of professional experience. You can then take the specific version of the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam for materials and metallurgical engineering, also proctored by the NCEES in conjunction with the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.
After the completion of training in metallurgical engineering, you can work as mining or materials engineers. If you go for a master's or doctoral degree, you can teach engineering. Other areas of employment for students of metallurgy include materials scientist, metallurgical laboratory technician, mining engineer, polymer engineer and materials engineer. Broader areas of study in this field include hydrometallurgy, Mechanical metallurgy, and Heat treatment of steels, Welding metallurgy and more. Physical metallurgy, Extractive metallurgy and Mineral processing are considered to be the major branches of Metallurgical Engineering.
