I have done my B.Sc. in Statistics and want to work in public sector or in any college/university. Where all can I be involved as a statistician?
There are various job opportunities for a qualified statistician in public sector organisations, financial institutions and major multinational companies. Doors for Indian Statistical Services, Indian Economic Services as well as Civil Services examination open up. One can be hired for teaching, statistical research, and consulting in many colleges and universities. The various fields of statisticians in public sector are- :
Surveys – Survey statisticians, as the name implies, collect information after a proper study of the specified sample and extend the same result to an entire population. There are various issues, such as political party during elections, or issues related to the general public, etc on which surveys can be conducted.
Government operations – Experiments on consumer prices, fluctuations in the economy, employment patterns, and population trends are done by statistician working with the government. They also aid in the development of public policy and legislations. ISS (Indian Statistical Service) is an examination conducted by UPSC at an All India Level for aspirants who are interested in having a career with the government. But for sitting in the examination the minimum qualification that is required is a Masters Degree with Statistics or Mathematical Statistics or Applied Statistics from a recognised university.
Scientific Research – Statisticians make the work of scientists much more feasible by working in tandem on their various experiments. Wildlife statisticians help to collect data on various animal populations and try to enact designs to protect endangered species. Many work with environmental engineers and scientists to work out problems related to earth’s environment.
Planning Commission, the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), Institute of Applied Manpower Research (IAMR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), statistical and economic bureaus, institutions associated with the socio-economic research, banks and public-sector undertakings are some of the other reputed organisations that give employment to a qualified statistician.
As mentioned earlier, statisticians are hired for teaching, statistical research and consulting in colleges and universities.
