Yoga – Torchbearer of a religion or a provider of health benefits?

Introduction

Yoga got a strong identity on the global platform when Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, called for observing an International Yoga day.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the celebration of International Yoga Day on June 21 at Rajpath in Delhi. Though, the program has been put under a lot of controversies, more than 30,000 people are going to be a part of this grand celebration.

The All India Personal Muslim Law Board protested against the practice of Surya Namaskar, which would be held during the Yoga day celebrations. They also demanded that yoga should not be made compulsory in schools or colleges. The Muslim community urged that the Modi government should not force people to participate in this celebration.

Though yoga and Hinduism have received its roots from Vedas, it does not promote the concept of any religion.

  • more over if we practise yoga we can replace yoga centers instead of hospitals.
and by including yoga as a lesson in the syllabus of both primary and secondary schools people came to know the benifits of it and there should be know need of special awareness about that.by this people can understood how swamy vivekandha and some more eminent personalites lead their life and the way of thinking of those personalites.

  • Yoga as per my opinion is not related to any caste, religon or any community. its an ancient gift to our mankind. but some people are taking it otherway. people should use there wit and understand that its for our benifit so dont compare it with any religon.

  • Hello everyone, I agree with all of you in most points. Yoga is a very effective kind of exercise which exhilarate our soul and mind too along with body fitness. We all know mental refreshment is the key to success. Yoga is a remedy for many diseases also. It has nothing to do with religion. Regarding making yoga a compulsory subject in schools and colleges, my point of view is that, we should not impose it to anyone. Because if he/she will forced to do yoga, then they neither will able to feel the mental refreshment nor the physical benefits of yoga. So instead of imposing it, we should make awareness about yoga. My own view of the matter is that: for awareness purpose, all schools should include one chapter or a text book about 'what yoga is and its benefits' in their course syllabus. Then practical classes of yoga should be kept as an optional subject.

  • yoga is a great way to make your body physically and mentally strong, its a very good intiative taken by our prime minister.yoga has nothing to do with religion, its just a excercise for our fitness then whats wrong in that.many people find it very useful thats why on international yoga day so many people have participated.although it should not be mandatory in schools or colleges as people will give the name of religion and yoga will make its own way,as many people will get know about its advantages.

  • Yoga is not something that is to be considered religious. It is just spreading science. The ways to make a man healthier both physically and mentally. And the international Yoga day etc. promote the science which was mostly mistook as religion leading to controversies.

  • On the celebration of International Yoga Day on 21st June 2015, around 192 countries had participated among which 40 countries were Muslim. This shows that Yoga in a way have affected many lives people in social as well as in healthy way.

Though Yoga and Hindusm have its roots from Vedas, it does not promote Hindusm. It is purely exercised for the personal benefits. For example, there are some exercises that are used to cure skin problems, constipation, Asthma, stress and what not. There are hundreds of videos on youtube giving instructions on how to performs such exercises. The most flabbergasting fact is that many of such videos are uploaded by foreign people. So it would be very queer to dwell on such thinking that yoga has anything to do with any religion.

Yoga is a set of exercises which ought to be performed by each and every individual around the globe as it provides many benefits.

  • Friends, I agree with the facts that Hinduism and Yoga have their roots from the same origin that is Vedas, but we can`t ignore the fact that yoga provide us a healthy life if practice it on a daily basis. Yoga actually has eight - 8 parts i.e. yama, niyama, pranayama, asanas, pratyaahar, aahar, dharna and dhyan. In todays' scenario we consider only two of these to be yoga ( i.e. aasanas and pranayama). Don`t you think that if only two components of Yoga helped us this much great ,that it improves our immunity, health, increases our energy, helps us to lose the weight and provides us inner peace, then what wonderful and drastic impact it will be if we perform all 8 components of yoga...
one should not think upon religious issue this much that he/she ignores this majestic gift of god.

  • I personaly believe that yoga is just a anchient meditation to keep body and soul pure and free form all aspects.well we live in era of science and modernisation but still we feel the true essence of yoga.it help us keep fit .The very important part of yoga is , even docter advice to keep follow yoga early in the morning.it just help us to reduce mental pressure and give positive energy. while western contires even trying to keep yoga as their indentity ,while india is the source of yoga in today Era. even if some one tried to make it wide as international yoga day on 21 jun, so why people just trying to give a religious matter to it. it just waste of time to dicuss on that matter.

  • Hi everyone!!

I agree that Yoga is 100% benefitial for our body. But there should not be any compulsion about exercising it.If someone is not at all willing to do it,then one will do it just because others are doing and it will end in zero result.sometimes this compulsion seems torture, too.

  • Yoga originated in India and is now being practiced across the globe by millions.
Every body is well acquainted with the benefits of Yoga and if it is accepted by most of the western countries, i really wonder how can anybody deny its practice just because it has its roots connected to a particular religion.
From my point of view it is just an act of displaying how NARROW MINDED some people can be!

  • Hello everyone,
I completely agree with you guys. Yoga helps us to be physically and mentally fit. Its helps us to concentrate on our work, keeps us cheerful. But there are some orthodox peoples everywhere who doesn't want to welcome any culture because they think by doing that their culture will be humiliated. This is only done by those people who are not open minded and in India these type of people are still everywhere.

So according to me yoga is not a torch bearer of a religion its only a provider of health benefits. Because if Hindus get comfort by doing Suryanamasker then Muslims also feel comfort

  • Yoga is a science, a form of exercise to keep aperson physically fit and mentally calm. It is formof practise to please our body from the busy schedule and give it some time to rejuvenate. To stretch out and give some potential time to the body to overcome the day-to-day stress cannot be called religion.

We can accept aerobics as exercise, swimming to be a good exercise, then why not yoga? Yoga is again a similar form of exercise done in a peaceful surrounding where the person can breathe in the essence of nature and live with the aroma of the fresh surrounding. The meditation is to concentrate into our soul and keep our mind peaceful, away from the stress and tension. This doesn't ask to chant the deity or do any religious practice.

As far as making yoga compulsary is concerned, it is a healthy routine for the children to develop their potential and glow better. Yoga rejuventes the energy when the persongets drained out in day-to-day hectic schedule. But, we can avoid forcing the same on adults. For children, a healthy practice since childhood can help them get out of bondages in their adulthood. Precisely, Yoga shouldnot be avoided in suspicion of being into the religionism; it is definitely a provider of health benefits.

  • Good afternoon everyone

According to me Yoga is 100% related to health and mental peace. It has no business with religion or any caste. In Yoga we have different different methods of how to keep ourselves fit. Yoga is the name given to a set of exercise which is done in the open environment. Yoga never tell that now remember Ram, Vishnu, Jesus or any other GOD's name.
So I don't know why there is that much issue on including Yoga in Schools and celebrating 21st June as INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY ?Yoga is just for your health benefit, it has nothing to do with hindu, muslim , sikh, or christian. As far as SURYE PRANDAYAM is concerned its basic motive is stretch your muscles and it help in reducing your core fats thats it.

  • i think any single view can have different visions.so on a positive life, yoga is ofcourse a boon for our life as it helps in leading a peaceful life and relaxed and good health.but extremity of anything isnt good and it shouldnt be made mandatory because different people have different mindset so they will only follow if they find it useful, otherwise they will give it the name of religion and criticise it.
