Should capital punishment be abolished?

Capital Punishment is strictly opposed by the human rights activist. They argue that the punishment acts as a deterrent in rare cases, and comes with a high risk of punishing the innocent person. The debate on Capital Punishment has echoed in the lower house several times. Even Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was against the death penalty. However, India maintained its stance on Capital Punishment and continued with the death penalty. Let us share our opinions on the topic. Should Capital Punishment be abolished?

Yes

• Capital Punishment promotes the concept of retributive justice that should have no place in the society.

• Capital Punishment doesn’t serve the purpose of stopping crimes. It is worth mentioning that the idea of punishment is enough to stop the crimes. Quantum of punishment doesn’t matters.

• Capital Punishment is an irrevocable form of justice that once done cannot be changed. It is crucial as the court of law sometimes makes a mistake in judgment and punishes innocent person.

• The life time imprisonment in which the criminals are sent to prison for at least fourteen years is a tougher form of punishment.

• There are various countries that have abolished the death penalty for all crimes. Following Capital Punishment is going against the progressive international trend of death penalty abolition.

No

• Death Penalty is restricted to the ‘rarest of rare’ cases, and therefore there is no harm in continuing the practice.

• There is nothing inhuman in punishing someone who crossed all the limits of brutality and deserves to be called an animal.

• Definitely the quantum of punishment matters! When the criminals know that the highest punishment is death, they will deter at least once before committing a crime.

• Abolishing capital punishment will only encourage the criminals to go ahead and opt the way of murder to seek the justice and revenge.

• Death penalty is an easy form of punishment as compared to life imprisonment where the criminal has to suffer mentally for the rest of life.

Conclusion

There is a meaning of every punishment. And Capital Punishment has got a significant meaning. It is especially for those people for whom the life of other people holds no meaning. Such people don’t need mercy. In fact government should opt for other way and make the execution easy. It is only then the real purpose of Capital Punishment will be fulfilled.

  • Capital punishment is like any other punishment in our law book that retains its own significance. Every form of punishment carries its own reasoning to justify the cause. Still such form of punishment doesn't have full acceptance. The death penalty is somehow retaine in India.

Such punishments arw awarde to crminals with highly serious criminal offence. The crimes keep on the increading note due to the lack of fear of severity of the punishments. A criminal who has done a brutal offense is definitely worth punishing with a death penalty.

The ratio of innocent being punished is very rare. Abolishing capital punishment would be like a treat to the ctiminals. A person is given death sentence after much investigation and discussion in the court of law. We need to honour such punishments as these definitely serve as a major note of checking the crime in the city.
