Indian Institutes of Information and Technology/IIIT Bill 2014 Passed

A bill to bring the institutes of information technology under a single authority and help students to obtain their degrees was passed in the LS today. IIIT or Indian Institutes of Information and Technology Bill 2014 is the first education bill to be passed by the Modi government which was formed on May 26.HRD Minister Smriti Irani has said that the students who pass from these institutes will bow be receiving degrees and efforts would be made to attract top faculty members. Regarding the autonomy of the institutes, she said “The governance structure of these institutes will be like that of the IITs and NITs which were based on the Central Universities Act as passed by Parliament. So questioning the structure would be like questioning Parliament’s wisdom.”

The 4 institutes are IIIT Allahabad, Gwalior, Design and Manufacturing Jabalpur and Design and Manufacturing Kancheepuram. These institutions will be given independent status with uniform policy framework according to the IIIT Act. Global standards for information technology are being sought through this move, the bill said.
