Gambling or Betting should be legalized in India

A rising trend of gambling or betting has been seen in the arena of sports. What will be the effects and side-effects of legalising gambling in India?

For:
- The major reason that we should opt in for legalizing gambling in India is due to the mounting pressure in a mushrooming diligence that tends to cross ethical boundaries and also to raise funds for the development of sports
- IT would help in abstaining people to get involved in illegitimate betting
- The possible amount of revenue gathered from the Indian betting market ranged between 12,000 – 19,000 crore to the government and this acted as a major motivation factor to legalize the system of betting in India
- Match – Fixing, a common aspect seen in the cricketing industry, will be reduced with the enactment of this law

Against:

- There is a lot of haziness in the gambling laws in India
- Gambling is not ratified in our culture not only that there is also a dearth of essential edification and awareness
- Also there is a need of implementing rigid laws in sports and that India is however not prepared to assent the legalization in betting

Conclusion:

- We should take some more time in analysing if India as a country is ready to accept betting as legal in the sports. Although it would reduce match fixing and illegal gambling tactics to a great extent but since it is not our culture, we should take this forward carefully.

  • I agree with the statement that gambling and betting should be legalized in India. In a democratic country like ours, it is now time to legalize forms of gambling including betting. Firstly, people have been heavily involved in this illegally since decades and making it legal will only do better for the citizens. They don’t have to hide and illegally gamble and the gambling mafia will not be able to cheat them any further as they will have competition in the free market. Moreover, the entire match fixing will also be reduced to a great extent. Secondly, by legalizing gambling the government of India will be able to earn a lot of revenue through taxes. These taxes can be utilized in many efficient ways for the development of the nation. Infrastructure and other amenities can be encouraged. The country can be flourished by fixing many of its impoverished parts through these taxes which will otherwise not come to the government. Thus legalizing gambling is a wise option for our country.

    • Gambling or Betting should be legalized in India, as it can be a good source of revenue for government. It can be evident from this example- Kerala State Lotteries, which has recorded profits of Rs. 681 crores, for the year 2012-13. If a single state can generate so much revenue from the lottery then a nation-wide chain of betting houses can easily generate thousands of crores.

    • As per the estimation of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) the size of the betting market is Rs 3 trillion. And government is losing out on tax revenues of Rs 12000 to 20,000 crores annually by not taxing betting. If India regulates the same then it could potentially help in funding in sports development, social protection or welfare schemes and infrastructure development plans.

    • By legalising betting or gambling, match fixing and spot fixing will be reduced to a large extent.

    • In recent times, many big personalities are involved unofficially in big business of cricket betting. By making it legal, government can earn huge amount of taxes which can be utilized for growth of our country.

    • In other countries, like United Kingdom, gambling industry has huge contribution to the economy in terms of output and employment. The total financial impact of betting industry in UK, is equivalent of 6 billion pounds, which also supports over 100,000 jobs in UK economy.

    • Share markets especially Indian share market is another gambling place, where there is no certainty when share prices will be up or go down. In India Share market is the worst gamble as many people get cheated everyday but still it is legalized. Then why gambling or betting cannot be legalised.

    • Gambling is not bad but just another game linked with economic benefits.

    • It will bring competition and transparency into the ominous underworld of gambling, which could help in curtailing illegal betting.

    • In order to stop corruption, betting should be legalised in the country. Minors and other vulnerable people will also be protected from the risk imposed by an unregulated market.

    • Once the market is open, people will prefer to bet through fair channels, online or offline. It will suck out the liquidity from the unregulated market and chances of fixing will reduce drastically.

    Against:
    • Gambling and Betting should be banned as there are many social consequences of it like people gamble away their family's savings.

    • Many times criminals are involved in it.

    • People put all their savings in gambling and lose all of it and in the end suicide. Considering such cases government should not legalize the gambling in any way.

    • If betting is legalized then even kids will start betting. Right now middle class people are not involved in gambling and if it gets legalized then this section of the society will be impacted badly. There are chances that the whole nation will become gambler.

    • It is a myth that legalization of sports betting will eliminate match fixing or spot fixing. Because it is a fact that human greed can never be controlled.

    • Legalizing of betting or gambling won’t work in our system where corruption is at its peak.

    • In order to make revenue from the game of gambling, few centers for gambling can be made in tourist places instead of making in legalize in the whole country.

    • Gambling or betting should remain illegal and more and more strict steps should be taken to check it.
