Is the era of coalition politics over?

The fever of General Elections might be over but the results are marking the start of the new era. The majority win of Narendra Modi shows the people’s anger against the Congress-led UP policies and the form of coalition government. Modi has got a huge support right from his campaigning days and it is even getting stronger day by day. The mandate has provided him with the golden opportunity to put his thoughts into the real actions, where he might not require any kind of bargaining with the heavy weight regional players. Does it suggest that the era of coalition politics is over now?

Yes

• The BJP win of 282 out of 543 seats is clearly the emergence of the first single party government in 30 years.

• Narendra Modi invited the SAARC leaders on swearing in ceremony. It is a different type of decision making and that is what the majority or non-coalition government is all about.

• PM Modi is streamlining the ministries to enhance coherence and transparency in the system. It is clearly the improvement of governance and not government, without interference of coalitions.

• PM Modi is focusing more on the foreign policies. Invitation of Pakistani PM, then talks of economic progress and strategic issues with China and other are the signs of a strong start.

• Now if anything goes wrong, the BJP government cannot hide anywhere. People have selected a majority form of government who can be held accountable in case of failures.

No

• It is not easy politics in India as it has a complex federation with clear defined limits as to what the Central Government can perform and deliver.

• Narendra Modi led BJP have got the majority in the Lower House but it is still short of a majority in the Upper House that is a big hurdle in passing the reforms.

• Narendra Modi led BJP have to seek support from the other parties to pass the reforms and bills in the Upper House.

• Everything cannot be measured in terms of reforms and bills in the houses. The social implications of BJP government will stay in focus.

• Any sort of actions leading to the communcal tension or violence will affect the decision making powers of the ruling government.

Conclusion

India has voted for political stability in General Elections 2014. The message is clear that is wants a responsible majority government that can be held accountable for any kind of wrong actions. Modi has started well by focusing more on governance, and minimum of government. It is an undisputed end of Coalition Politics.

  • Indians had been longing for such a government for a long time. The time has approached now after a very long waiting time. A government formed with full majority is a real governance and good politics. This could provide more stability to the country and definitely help in the economic growth and good market appraise.

But, with a single performance, in fact just the beginning of the show, we cannot call this to a cease point for the coalition politics. This government need to stabilize, fulfil their commitments and bag a tag of excellence, in order to carry on with this trend ahead. If Modi Government happens to excel in their performance, then definitely this could be a new beginning for Indian politics.

The era of coalition politics definitely require a quick wrap up, as the hung parliament had already caused much hazard in to the governance and economy of the country. We Indian keep our fingers crossed and wish this government to succeed and end the era of coalition politics.
