Explanation

Earlier it was the normal form of printing and was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid 15th century. It introduced the movable type and is also known as the typographic printing technique. The letterpress printing machine can be classified into three parts – rotary, platen – type and flat – bed cylinder. There are two types of rotary letterpress – sheet fed and web fed. Amongst the two, web fed are the most common type of letterpress. Most of the newspapers use web fed rotary letterpress printing. Platen – type letterpress printing is made up of two flat surfaces – bed and the platen. The flat – bed cylinder letterpress printing uses vertical or horizontal beds. The plate is attached with a bed which passes over an inking roller and then against the substrate. Ink is supplied by an inking roller or an ink fountain.
