- Introduction
Dairy Technology is all about handling milk from production and consumption and includes processing, packaging, storage, transport and physical distribution. Based on the sciences of biochemistry, bacteriology, and nutrition, Dairy Technology employs the principles of engineering. Its main objectives are to prevent spoilage, improve quality, increase shelf-life, and make milk edible and safe for human consumption. The AMUL was founded in 1946 which led to the development of the diary industry and gave momentum to education in dairying.
Performance and growth of industry in India
In the last two decades the spectacular growth of the diary industry has created various demands for indigenous production of dairy equipments, increased quality standards and production of various milk products. This has also developed the dairy equipment manufacturing industry and technical consultancy organizations. Such an expansion of dairy industries and other related industries has opened up vast career opportunities for dairy engineers. Now there are more than 400 dairy plants in the country making various types of milk products which require good qualified and well trained personnel to run the plants efficiently. The increased growth in the dairy processing industry has also encouraged the indigenization of dairy equipment. Presently, there are over 170 dairy equipment manufacturers. There are two types of jobs in the industry: one is equipment design and fabrication and plan design and other one is project execution. These jobs can only be performed by dairy technologist with aptitude in engineering.
Options and Opportunities
With the rapid growth in the diary industry the diary technologists have got various job opportunities in this field. They can undertake consultancy work, teaching, and research work. They can even start their own business. After completing courses in diary engineering one can work as a supervisor in a diary plan or can also become dairy consultant or can take up entrepreneurial ventures in milk plants or ice cream units.
